The icon of The Myrrh Bearing Women to the right of the pulpit was commissioned by Trinity’s Vestry in 2020 to commemorate the election of The Rev. Diana Akiyama as the 11th Bishop of Oregon. The Rt. Reverend Akiyama was consecrated as bishop, at Trinity, on January 30, 2021. Bishop Akiyama has the distinction of being the first Japanese-American woman ordained to the Episcopal priesthood, and of being the first Asian-American woman bishop in the Episcopal Church.
The icon is based on a prototype by Leonid Ouspensky and depicts Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome - the first witnesses to the resurrection according to the Gospel of Mark. When they arrive at the tomb, they find the stone rolled away and an angel who announces to them that Jesus has risen.
