St. Dunstan’s Basilica has 12 “consecration crosses” which are etched into the four walls at various points of the church. One of the crosses is visible on the wall to the right behind the priest’s chair in the sanctuary. Cathedrals, such as St. Dunstan’s, are consecrated to God for perpetual use as a place of worship. 12 crosses are representative of the 12 apostles. Gothic churches also are supported by 12 pillars as in the Book of Revelation where the heavenly city stood on 12 foundation stones, again representative of the 12 apostles. Looking down the basilica from the front to the back you can count the pillars on both sides.
The next stop is in front of the altar area looking onto the sanctuary.
