Standing outside on the front step of the Basilica, we take in the first noticeable feature of St. Dunstan’s gothic architecture: the “vertical emphasis”. This emphasis encourages us to look up, focusing “heavenward”. The Basilica’s steeples, soar 200 feet high and are topped with 10-foot crosses. The pinnacles and arches also have an emphasis upward to “things that are above”.
Stay on the front step for the next stop in the tour.
