Hi, my name is Rebecca Cuming of Broomfield Colorado and the title of this piece in Tilting West is called “Earth Song”.
This work draws inspiration from the vast open spaces and plowed fields where I live.
My intention is not to merely represent these environments, but to translate their moods, movements and seasons into a language of marks, textures, and layered color.
I explore the tension between order and wildness: the geometry of a plowed field and an unpredictable expressively painted foreground. My process is shaped by these dualities: the urge to let intuition lead, and the comfort found in repeating patterns carved across the landscape.
I titled this painting “Earth Song” because the linear swirl of barbed wire reminded me of a musical clef rising against a vast snowy field accompanied by dashing red-winged blackbirds, — a celebration of grace, freedom and resilience not the taming of a frontier.
To me, the subtle distant horizon feels like a sacred space—one that invites reflection and suggests limitless possibilities.
