Telegram from the Solomon Family in Response to General Ulysses S. Grant’s Expulsion Order

“The Jews, as a class … are hereby expelled from the Department.” So began the notorious order issued by General Grant in December 1862, expelling Jews from the vast territory under his command. President Lincoln quickly countermanded the order, as noted in this January 1863 telegram.
