Portraits of the Brandon Rodrigues siblings, c. 1815

Sarah Rodrigues Brandon (1798-1828) and her brother Isaac Lopez Brandon (1792-1855) were born in Barbados to an enslaved mother. Emancipated by their Jewish father, they became prominent members of the New York Jewish community. Painted in watercolor on ivory, their miniatures are the first known portraits of multiracial Jews.
