Portrait of Rebecca Gratz, 1858

Born in 1781 in Lancaster, PA, Rebecca Gratz was a Jewish American educator and philanthropist. Active members in the historic Mikveh Israel synagogue, her family came to the region before the Revolution. This is one of just a few rare portraits of Gratz painted by the artist Thomas Sully.
