Copita Tequileria y Comida

OVERVIEW

Copita Tequilería y Comida at 739 Bridgeway was co-created in 2012 by celebrated chef and PBS television personality Joanne Weir, known for authentic Mexican cuisine and one of the most serious tequila and mezcal programs on the West Coast. ‘Copita’ means ‘little cup’ — the unglazed clay vessel used by Oaxacan mezcaleros to taste their spirits — and the award-winning bar program honors that tradition alongside a wood-fired rotisserie menu and house-made tortillas. Consistently recognized as one of Marin County’s finest Mexican dining destinations.

HISTORY

Before Sausalito had a European name, the Coast Miwok people inhabited these shores for at least 3,000 years, fishing the tidal waters of Richardson Bay. The Spanish colonial era reached this cove in 1775 when the San Carlos anchored here. By 1838, the Mexican government had granted Rancho Sausalito — encompassing virtually all of present-day Sausalito — to William Antonio Richardson, an English sea captain who had converted to Mexican citizenship. Richardson built the first non-indigenous structure in what would become Sausalito near this waterfront, and the street grid he laid out became the city's bones. Every business on Bridgeway stands on what was once Mexican territory, granted under a Mexican flag.
