OVERVIEW
Salito’s Crab House & Prime Rib at 1200 Bridgeway has served the Sausalito waterfront since the 1980s from a spectacular perch above Richardson Bay, with sweeping views across the water toward the Marin hills and beyond. Known for fresh Dungeness crab, prime rib, and classic American seafood, it draws locals and visitors alike for its generous menu and unbeatable waterfront setting. The restaurant occupies one of the finest dining positions on the Marin waterfront, right at the spot where Caledonia Street meets the Bay.
HISTORY
On May 23, 1868, an estimated 4,000 spectators lined this exact stretch of waterfront for the third California Scottish Highland Games — among the largest sporting events held in the American West to that point. The Caledonian Club of San Francisco, founded by seventeen Scottish Gold Rush veterans, staged caber toss, stone put, hammer throw, and pipe band competitions on this very ground. The event so shaped local identity that the adjacent street was named Caledonia in its honor. That name has never changed — 157 years later, Caledonia Street still carries the echo of one afternoon's Highland Games on Richardson Bay. Historians estimate 4,000 Scots attended. One suspects a fair amount of whisky was consumed on the premises.
