Black Building: 114-118 North Broadway

The Black Building was built from 1929 to 1931 is Art Moderne with eight stories, light Indiana limestone facing, steel casement windows, black metal window spandrels, Art Moderne interior details in cast metal crane motif in elevator doors and banisters, oak woodwork.

Lang, Raugland, and Lewis, Minneapolis; Brasseth and Houkom, associate architects. 

The building was once mentioned in Ripley's "Believe it or Not" newspaper features because the Black Building was white. The eight-story Black Building was Fargo's tallest building for many years. It was also the tallest building in North Dakota for about five years, until the North Dakota State Capitol was built in Bismarck.

The cornerstone was laid on November 17, 1930, and the Black Building and the Sears and Roebuck store opened for business in 1931.

The Black Building was registered on the National Registry of Historic Places in 2016.
