First Lutheran Church: 619 North Broadway

Across the street from the Cathedral of Saint Mary, and measuring only four feet shy of her neighbor, sits First Lutheran Church, 619 North Broadway, built in 1919 after a merger between First Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church and Saint Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. The English Gothic Revival style church was built by Minneapolis architecture firm Magney and Tussler and construction was completed by T.F. Powers Construction Co. of Fargo.

The congregation of First Lutheran Church dates back to 1871 – the year Fargo was incorporated – and early members were primarily Norwegian immigrants who had moved to Fargo from Rice County in Minnesota.  The first service in the church was held on Christmas Day in 1919, but it was in the basement as the sanctuary had yet to be completed; the first service in the sanctuary itself came one year later.
