My name is Jane

Best known as a cultural melting pot where the East meets the West, Hong Kong has undergone some radical changes in recent years. Against this backdrop, “My name is Jane” is a poignant reminder of one’s cultural and national identity in today’s political climate. By using ink, brush and paper to signify Chineseness, Yipang writes the English names of local artists in ‘reverse English’. In subverting the English language and standing it on its head, she wants us to examine how our personal identity and values have been shaped by western culture.
