Raccoons
You are now visiting the raccoon habitat.
Raccoons are native to the Pacific Northwest and are among the most intelligent and adaptable wildlife species in North America. Known for their curiosity and problem-solving abilities, raccoons explore the world using their highly sensitive front paws almost like human hands.
Their paws contain thousands of specialized sensory receptors that help them identify objects through touch, especially at night. Water actually increases their sensitivity, which is one reason raccoons are often seen dipping or manipulating food in water before eating.
Living here at Cat Tales are Billy and Milly.
Billy was found orphaned and raised by a well-meaning family, causing him to become habituated to humans at a very young age. After later being injured by another animal, Washington Fish and Wildlife authorized Cat Tales to provide the medical care he needed.
Milly was illegally kept as a pet after being found as a baby raccoon. As she grew older and developed normal raccoon behaviors, her owners realized they could no longer safely manage her and reached out for help.
Both Billy and Milly now serve as educational ambassadors to help teach an important message: wild animals should remain wild. Animals that become too comfortable around people often cannot safely return to nature. In many cases, habituated wildlife are euthanized because they no longer fear humans or know how to survive naturally. Billy and Milly were fortunate to receive permanent placement here at Cat Tales instead.
Although raccoons may appear playful and social, they can also be highly territorial. Because Billy and Milly were raised separately during important developmental stages, they each developed strong individual behaviors and are housed separately for safety.
Raccoons are excellent climbers, strong swimmers, and remarkably adaptable animals capable of living in forests, wetlands, urban neighborhoods, and many places in between.
Take a moment to watch how they use their paws, investigate their surroundings, and interact with enrichment objects. Much of a raccoon’s intelligence is visible in the way they explore the world around them.
As you continue around the sanctuary loop, you will soon arrive at another bobcat habitat followed by the serval habitat.
