Lynx

Lynx

You are now visiting the lynx habitats.

Lynx are medium-sized wild cats known for their short tails, long legs, tufted ears, and oversized paws. Those large paws help them move quietly across snow and rough terrain, almost like built-in snowshoes.

Here at Cat Tales, you may see both Canada lynx and Carpathian lynx. Although they are closely related, the two species come from very different parts of the world and have adapted to different environments.

Canada lynx are built for deep northern snow and cold forests across Canada and parts of the northern United States. Their lives are closely connected to snowshoe hares, which are their primary prey in the wild.

One of the Canada lynx who lives here is Jynx. Jynx arrived at Cat Tales in 2020 after the passing of his longtime owner. He is exceptionally large for a Canada lynx and has a personality to match. As he has gotten older, part of his care now includes occasional veterinary visits for grooming and health checks.

Nearby is Sibella, who arrived as a young kitten in 2018. Sibella is curious, energetic, and very vocal. Guests can often hear her calling throughout the sanctuary, especially when she is interacting with neighboring lynx through the enclosure walls.

You may also meet Taz, a Carpathian lynx native to a species found in the mountains of Eastern Europe. Carpathian lynx are generally larger and more heavily built than Canada lynx. Like many wild animals raised as pets, Taz became difficult to safely manage as he matured and developed stronger territorial instincts. Today, he has a secure environment designed to support his natural behaviors and welfare needs.

Lynx are patient ambush predators that rely on quiet movement, sharp hearing, and careful observation. Take a moment to watch how they move through their habitat. Even when resting, lynx remain highly aware of their surroundings.

As you continue around the sanctuary loop, you will soon arrive at the bobcat habitat.
