Two Gray Frogs

Look carefully at Two Grey Frogs and you will see a repeated image across the top third of the painting. Underneath a wash of paint, Rigsby affixed two copies of a poster advertising a 1973 exhibit at Yale University’s School of Art. The photo features a large frog, the words “Frogmore, SC 29902,” and two people in a boat. On the right, holding an oar, is the artist himself, and at the other end of the boat is an artist named Marian Etheridge.  Frogmore is the name of a small town near Beaufort where Rigsby was the first public school artist in residence in South Carolina’s history. Rigsby and Etheridge were colleagues and jointly showed their work at the Yale exhibit.
