This is Deborah Jang. Thanks for visiting my show, SUM OF THE PARTS. With this piece, I challenged myself to create a large scale sculpture that I could still personally maneuver and that would not require a semitruck to transport. THE CENTER WILL NOT HOLD occupies about 6' x 9' x 1.5' of space. It is built of relatively lightweight objects and can be installed modularly. It includes parts from a rattan chair, a windmill blade, an ironing board, arrows, oars, croquet mallets, and an Absolut Vodka display –– Like other pieces in the show, it is a gathering of disparate components coming together in a most unlikely union. Or ... are they actually exploding outward? Will the center hold? In the midst of chaos and disintegration, where things seem to be coming apart and cohesive forces are failing, this piece perhaps is my best prayer.
