Over the Sofa

This is Deborah Jang. Thank you for visiting my show, SUM OF THE PARTS. Several of my long horizontally formatted sculptures comprise this playfully-titled OVER THE SOFA series, which poses the question: Do you choose art that matches your furniture or furniture that matches your art? Each of these wall-mounted pieces incorporates random components -- miscellanea collected from anywhere and everywhere -- brought together and juxtaposed in unexpected arrangements where they play off one another, offer intrigue or evoke nostalgia, and take on a new sense of belonging within the composition. Some of the parts you may recognize in these sculptures include embroidery hoops, a street sign, fan blades, oars, furniture parts, brooms, shutters, reflector lights, an abacus, metal doodads, and wooden knick-knacks. The piece CONUNDRUMIUM evolved from several smaller works into a nonsensical playful puzzle. ROW was named for its unruly attempt at a straight line, and for the oar, one of its many random objects. CAMINO DEL CORAZON was built during Covid when we were "shuttered in." Somehow the camino del corazon street sign took on extra special significance during that time. REMAINS OF THE DAY is another far-ranging array of forms, textures, and materials finding second lives. And FISH STORY is one of my rare symmetrical compositions, placed in the Conversation Corner of the gallery, right over the sofa
