This is Deborah Jang. Thank you for visiting my show, SUM OF THE PARTS. In 2021, I participated in a project called NO VACANCY, where artists were invited to occupy and activate an old warehouse building that had been slated for demolition in the 5 Points/RINO district of Denver. During this residency, I started a series of chair sculptures. It's amazing how many abandoned chairs you can find in the world, at yard sales, in thrift stores, left in alleyways, or sitting on curbs during large-item pickup day. WE'RE NOT IN KANSAS ANYMORE is a sculptural tower consisting of a chaotic jumble of these chair parts along with some metal salvage. The ORBITAL CHAIR was also built during this residency, employing metal and wood parts assembled on a rotating office chair. It was an interactive piece, creating a kind of cosmic experience for people to sit and embed themselves within. A more recent addition to the series is SIT.STAY.BREATHE, a florally-enhanced chair piece in which you are welcome to sit on in the Conversation Corner of the gallery and immerse yourself in that installation.
