Turnage Theater

150 West Main Street

Vaudeville groups came to the New Theater (2nd floor) on their entertainment circuit. Roy Rodgers was one of the famous acts that performed.

During the 1920's silent movies became popular, so the New Theatre decided to show these movies regularly. Later in 1927, movies with sound (called "talkies") became popular all over the country. There was so much noise from cars on the Street that the audience could not hear the sound from the movie. C.A. Turnage decided to build a second theatre behind the Vaudeville stage to be further away from the Street. The second theatre, named the Turnage Theatre, opened in 1928.
