Next, we’ll head to 400 N Fredonia St and the First United Methodist Church, where sunlight streams through some of the most exquisite stained-glass windows in East Texas.
These hand-painted windows were created in the 1950s by the Jacobi Art Glass Company of St. Louis, Missouri. When they were installed, they cost just under $20,000. Today, they are insured for about $1 million because of their remarkable craftsmanship and artistry.
Each window tells part of the life of Jesus, from His birth to His resurrection, using rich color symbolism. Deep reds represent His sacrifice. Doves symbolize peace. Wheat and grapes remind viewers of communion. Every piece of glass was carefully hand-stroked with meticulous detail, allowing each scene to glow with spiritual warmth.
The church itself has long been a central part of Longview’s community life, from hosting early Boy Scout meetings to supporting countless charitable efforts. Many visitors choose to sit quietly in the pews, watching the light shift across the sanctuary walls, a moving reminder of faith, art, and time.
