Our first stop on the tour is the Gregg County Historical Museum, housed in the impressive Everett Building, at 214 N Fredonia St. The Everett is a two story brick landmark that has stood since 1910. As you pull up north along Fredonia Street, take a moment to notice the raised basement, tall arched windows, and classic early twentieth century design. When this building was constructed, the surrounding streets formed the heart of Longview’s commercial district, busy with cotton brokers and merchants. The Everett Building is one of the few remaining structures from that era, as much of downtown’s earlier landscape was later replaced by modern development.
Inside, the museum tells the story of Gregg County, from the years when cotton dominated the economy to the oil discovery that reshaped the region in the 1930s. Exhibits explore the Dalton Gang’s 1894 robbery in Longview, the vital role of the railroad, and an interactive Kids Zone where younger visitors can experience history firsthand. The museum is currently undergoing renovations that will expand its exhibits to include tributes to local athletes, artists, and Native American heritage, ensuring that Gregg County’s story continues to grow along with its community.
