From GCHM look across the street to213 N. Fredonia. The Longview Museum of Fine Arts, known as LMFA, that made its new home in the historic Longview National Bank building, a downtown landmark now being transformed into a vibrant cultural hub for the community. Preservation of the building is supported by the Texas Historical Commission and guided by standards that recognize age, historical significance, and architectural integrity.
In 2023, the Longview National Bank building was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the federal list of properties recognized for historical or architectural importance. This designation highlights the building’s significance, helps protect its mid century architecture, and supports its adaptive reuse as the future home of LMFA. Another, far more selective designation is National Historic Landmark status, which is reserved for places of exceptional national significance and is automatically included on the National Register.
National Register listing brings recognition and can make preservation work eligible for support such as restoration incentives and tax credits. It also encourages careful stewardship by requiring federal projects to consider impacts to the property, while not requiring the building to be open to the public.
LMFA’s project is a powerful example of how a historic structure can be preserved and repurposed, ensuring that a treasured landmark continues to serve Longview for generations to come.
