The story of this 2003 ALPINA Z8 Roadster isn’t just about a car; it’s about a family, and the unexpected ways a shared passion can connect generations. This Z8, a rare gem from ALPINA Automobile’s workshops, is one of a limited production run. In total, only 555 ALPINA Z8 Roadsters were manufactured, and out of that limited number, just 450 were specifically built for the North American market. From the moment it was new, this car has been a Fouts family treasure. The car itself, rolling on its signature 20-inch ALPINA alloy wheels, which were a defining visual cue distinguishing it from the standard BMW Z8, remains untouched, a pure expression of the enhancements that ALPINA graced on and already exceptional machine. Unlike the standard Z8, the ALPINA version was only available with a five-speed Steptronic automatic transmission, emphasizing a more relaxed, yet still potent, grand touring experience.
Justin, who grew up in Chicago, Illinois, had his own automotive awakening in 1998. With hard-earned savings, he purchased a used 1996 E36 M3. That car wasn’t just transportation; it was a revelation. He recounted a pivotal moment with his father, Donald, a man of few words with a penchant for Cadillacs. When Donald needed a ride to the airport, Justin offered to drive on one condition: his father had to drive the M3.
As they journeyed, the car’s dynamic capabilities began to work their magic. Upon arriving at the airport, Donald, after experiencing the M3’s performance firsthand, turned to Justin and simply said, “I get it.” That single drive sparked a transformation. It opened Donald’s eyes to his son’s passion for BMWs and subtly began to influence his own automotive leanings.
