John Hulbrock’s journey into the world of ALPINA began in 2018, with a whisper from an unexpected source: his son’s friend, a vehicle broker. This wasn’t a casual mention; it was the introduction to something rare, something special. The object of this introduction was a 1991 E34 B10 Bi-Turbo, a car with a past shrouded in Japanese characters, its service records a mystery to most American eyes. This ALPINA had spent its formative years in Japan, a detail that added to its mystique. John learned that these cars were not common, even among enthusiasts. The broker suggested that perhaps only six to eight of these machines existed in the entire United States.
The E34 B10 Bi-Turbo was a time capsule, a car that had escaped the modifications that often befall high-performance vehicles. Everything was as ALPINA intended it, a testament to the car’s original engineering. John soon discovered the heart of the beast: an engine that delivered power in a way he’d never quite experienced. The turbos weren’t lazy; they were awake, alive, it seemed, even at idle. This translated to breathtaking acceleration, a surge of power that pushed him back in his seat. But this exhilarating performance came with a trade-off: a thirst for fuel that demanded respect.
John’s attraction to ALPINA wasn’t about trends; it was about rarity, about owning something seldom seen. This E34 B10 Bi-Turbo had arrived at the perfect moment, a confluence of opportunity and desire. He saw the car, and the decision was instant. He told the broker he would buy it. This E34 was his first ALPINA, but it ignited a hunger for more. He found himself already looking for the next one, waiting for the stars to align once again and align it did! The Ultimate Driving Museum is honored to share the passion of this beautiful ALPINA in our 9th major exhibit, ALPINA: 60 Years of Excellence.
