In 1996 ALPINA presents a sensation: For the first time in a three-cylinder body, ALPINA manages to “transplant” an eight-cylinder engine - the BMW ALPINA B8 4.6. With 245 kW / 333 hp combined with a 5-speed manual transmission, the drive ensures superior driving abilities - no matter what speed range. The BMW ALPINA B8 4.6 is available in 4 body styles: Sedan, Coupé, Convertible and Touring. The development of this fascinating automobile can be traced back to a bet between Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Reitzle (then BMW Board Member for Development) and Burkard Bovensiepen:
Prof. Dr. Reitzle bet that ALPINA would not be able to find space for the eight-cylinder engine in the small engine compartment of the 3 Series. In the end, both were right: 42 modifications to the body and an installation from above were necessary to achieve the desired result. An effort that could obviously not be accomplished on the BMW production line. The B8 4,6 Convertible shown here remained in the classic collection of ALPINA since it was new.
