In 2021, Dirk added a significant chapter to his personal ALPINA story with the acquisition of a 1991 BMW ALPINA RLE Z1 Roadster (E30). This wasn't just any Z1; it was a rare bird, one of only 66 Z1’s ever converted by ALPINA, and even more exclusive as number 28 of the 66 built in November of 1990. This particular Z1 RLE, showing a modest 35,500 kilometers on its odometer, remains untouched by any modifications beyond ALPINA's initial enhancements.
The distribution of these rare Z1 RLEs was intriguing. Of the 66 produced, 33 stayed in Europe and the remaining 33 found homes in Japan, highlighting the strong appreciation for ALPINA in that market. This particular car eventually made its way from the ALPINA factory in Munich to a German dealer before being sold to the San Francisco owner, marking its first foray into the United States. According to Dirk's research, only three RLEs ever officially made it to American shores, making his acquisition even more significant.
Beyond the prized Z1 RLE, Dirk's garage houses a testament to his broad appreciation for BMW's diverse offerings, albeit with a distinct ALPINA flavor. He owns a 315/1, a 328, a 507, and a 2002 ALPINA A2 in immaculate condition. He even owned a Z3 and a Z8 in the past, selling them after experiencing the unique character of the Z1 RLE. For Dirk, the Z1 RLE offered something special, a tangible difference in driving feel and performance compared to its BMW counterpart, boasting 30 more horsepower over the standard Z1.
