The Kanmuri is part of a traditional Shinto priest’s clothing worn at formal rites and ceremonies. Shinto, or “Way of the Gods,” is the indigenous religion of Japan that is focused on ritual practices at shrines where sacred spirits are honored. This style of headdress dates back to the Heian era (794-1185), when Kanmuri were worn by noblemen for formal occasions.
