Huichol Shaman’s Hat (Rupurero)

Mexico

Mid-20th century

Palm leaves, feathers, beads, velvet, yarn

The Huichol, or Wixåritari, as they call themselves, are among the few North American indigenous peoples to maintain their pre-Columbian beliefs and traditions. Religion permeates all aspects of their life, and very little distinction is made between the sacred and everyday worlds. Shamans (Mara’akame), who can be identified by their Rupurero, play an important role in maintaining the physical and spiritual health of the community. The consumption of peyote is an essential part of their religious rituals.
