Sunset

Although best known for his explorations of popular culture and celebrity, Warhol also turned his attention to the natural world. The Sunset portfolio was commissioned by an architectural firm for the Hotel Marquette in Minneapolis. Using three silkscreen stencils, he created 472 unique color variations, each evoking a distinct mood. The source image came from his film of the same title, which captures the fading light of sunset in real time across three locations: East Hampton, San Francisco, and New York.
