One of Warhol’s most recognizable prints, Flowers was produced in a range of color variations. The image is based on a 1964 photograph of hibiscus blossoms by Patricia Caulfield, originally published in Modern Photography. Created at Warhol’s studio, The Factory, the series exemplifies the detached, mechanical approach that defined his style. The motif was suggested by curator Henry Geldzahler as Warhol prepared for his first solo show at Leo Castelli Gallery, marking a decisive shift from the darker Death and Disaster works that preceded it.
