Kimiko

Warhol visited Colorado State University in 1981 when collectors John and Kimiko Powers helped organize an exhibition of his work. John Powers, who ran the textbook publisher Prentice Publishing, and Kimiko divided their time between homes in New York and Aspen, Colorado. This portrait of Kimiko, commissioned first as a painting in 1971, was used to promote Warhol’s CSU exhibition. Kimiko initially wore contemporary Western apparel when sitting for the Polaroid photo that would be the basis for the image but changed into a kimono at Warhol’s request.
