If you decide to keep walking, this is a good time to take a break. Stop at the bathroom building. Take a sip of water, use the restroom and sit for a bit.
Breathe …… Take this moment to thank a green plant, like the trees around you. They produce food and oxygen for us and the wildlife surrounding you. Trees are also good homes for birds, squirrels and insects.
Construction of the Dam
Get close to the wooden fence along the parking lot adjacent from the bathrooms. This is a great spot to see the dam.
Construction of the dam began in 1908 and continued into early 1910. Kenefick Construction Company of Kansas City brought its men and equipment to the site on the Colorado and Southern Railroad, which also hauled and dumped the massive amount of dirt required to raise the dam wall. Excavation was accomplished using large steam shovels and dragline dredges.
The concrete structure north of the dam is the spillway. This was built in 2003 to regulate water flow. It allows water to flow freely over the dam in case of flooding.
