Salvinia

SALVINIA

This display contains Giant Salvinia, an invasive fern from Brazil. It is the most problematic aquatic plants in our local lakes and waterways. It damages aquatic ecosystems by outgrowing and replacing native plants that provide food and habitat for native animals and waterfowl. Additionally, it blocks out sunlight and decreases oxygen to the detriment of fish and other aquatic animals. Giant salvinia infestations often expand very rapidly. It can double in size in about a week under the right circumstances.

Watercraft owners are encouraged to clean boats and trailers before leaving salvinia infested water bodies. Game wardens will issue tickets for transport of salvinia species, as well as other prohibited plants.
