Dan Robert Miller, Star, 1975

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Five-armed black wooden star. The arms are not pointed, but long and arced as if cut from a circle. There is a large center jewel with five rays of four gems on each arm. The gems vary in color including red, blue, and white.

NARRATIVE: Dan Robert Miller specialized in life-sized or larger than life-size free-standing pieces which are often modeled on friends and famous individuals who are deceased, but who at one time had provided him with a vivid visual image. These sculptural portraits are highly polished and usually decorated with a pattern of symbolic details and show the use of multiple images and relationships. Miller’s work also displays a respect for the original form of the material from which the carving is made.
