The Quest to Dream: A Rare Collection of the First Printed Don Quixote Illustrations

Welcome to The Laredo Center for the Arts! This special exhibition is brought to you from the rare book collection of Mr. Cliffe Killam, community-minded sponsors, and the Laredo Center for the Arts - all united in their commitment to education, culture, and the joy of discovery.

First published in the early 1600s, Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quixote is comprised of two volumes, published separately in 1605 and 1615. While some editions may combine the two volumes into a single book, or be published in a set of four, the original novel consists of two distinct parts.

Through these rare, first-printed illustrations, this exhibit explores the spirit of Don Quixote and his loyal squire, Sancho Panza, as they journey through the landscapes of imagination and conviction.

Here, you’ll encounter images that brought the novel to life for readers over 400 years ago - images that still speak to universal themes of courage, folly, friendship, and hope. As you move through the space, you’ll see how art and storytelling have shaped our understanding of Don Quixote’s quest, and perhaps, reflect on your own.

So, take your time. Let the art guide you. And remember: every great journey begins with a dream.
