Mami Yamamoto

Hello.  My name is Mami Yamamoto.  I have been making monoprints since the fall of 2014.  I print all my prints, including these four prints at the Art Students League of Denver. 

For the process of my monoprint printmaking, which are all one of a kind, I use a plexiglass for a plate.  Using a brayer, I roll oil base etching ink on the surface of a plexiglass and begin to design the ink using a variety of materials and techniques, such as stencils, sharpened chopsticks, plastic forks, Q-tips, drawings, coarse fabrics etc.  I also use paper the lithography technique to create bold shapes and elements. 

Each completed design is printed on a BFK paper through an etching press and the remaining ink on the plexiglass is entirely cleaned to create the next design. I layer multiple times to finish a print.  As I repeat this process I use the same plate, without making any permanent marks, all my final prints are unique.

Growing up in Japan, distinguished sensibilities, deeply rooted in its culture, may almost be a prerequisite for its people.  In every aspect of my young life, I was trained to be conscious about space and its use, along with shapes and colors that are interacted with them. 

In each space, how productively and efficiently I can express my full vision, with hidden surprises and humors, is my primary goal with these prints.  Naivete,  playful lines ,and motifs also create straight and unintentional appearances.
