In 1912, before most of the homes of Hyde Park existed, this historic church stood overlooking the water. Originally built as a simple wood building, it was called “Saint John’s by the Sea Episcopal Mission”. In 1917, the mission became a parish with over 100 members. By 1924, the masonry of today’s structure began and the church grew from there.
Saint John’s is a Neo-Gothic structure with a dominant bell tower, and is built as a cruciform church. This means that if you look at it from above, you will see that it’s shaped like a cross.
Its three great stained-glass windows are some of its most loved features. The first window located in the back is dedicated to the Transfiguration of Our Lord. The second, on the north wall of the transept, is dedicated to Saint Mary the Virgin the mother of Our Lord. The final window is a glorious rose window with Christ the King set in the middle of the window, and it is dedicated to those who served in the two world wars.
Saint John’s closely follows the liturgical seasons of the year and joyfully offers special Christmas services and music to mark them, such as: Advent Lessons and Carols, the Annual Christmas Concert, Christmas Eve services, a Children’s Pageant, and Midnight Mass.
