This splendid home was built in 1926 for $65,000 by JR Hinson—president of the Florida Auto and Gas Engine Company. It stands as a splendid example of Italian Renaissance architecture with its low-pitched ceramic tiled roof and wide eaves. This residence is also believed to be the first house in Tampa with bathrooms adjoining each bedroom. Michael Connelly, the famous writer, also lived here for many years.
Prior to the current owners meeting each other in Tampa in 2012, they had each admired this home. The wife once lived in a rental nearby and often walked by and dreamed of living here. Unbeknownst to her, her future husband would do the same when he went on runs through Hyde Park.
They eventually met, married, moved back from Chicago, and befriended a neighbor who happened to work as the family attorney for the previous owner. The couple had also separately become close acquaintances with the real-estate agent who held the listing. The couple quickly closed the deal and have enjoyed raising their young children here. They especially appreciate the home's spacious layout for all of the entertaining that they do.
The family’s favorite stories about this home have to do with its paranormal activity. The former owners left an interesting note to this end as well. The family hasn't experienced much, but they do recall standing in the kitchen late one quiet, peaceful evening. Suddenly without warning, with nobody around, the doors between the pantry and dining room closed. The family is happy to think that if apparitions do exist, that they enjoy the family's presence and parties, that the spirits have come back, perhaps, for one last hurrah.
One last note: apparently someone was shot in the billiards room.
