18: The cellarium

The next doorway on the left leads to the cellarium. Look up to the right as you go through the doorway, where you can still see lines of mock stonework and fish scale patterns painted on the wall. 

This is the cellarium, the ground floor of the West Range, linking the cloister to the outside world. Our monks would not have known this as the vast space we see today. In their time it was partitioned into the lay brothers refectory to the left, and the stores for the abbey to the right.
