7: The infirmary

Please stand for a moment at this end of the path. Looking down the valley again, you’ll see the remains of the infirmary, the abbey’s large hospital and ‘retirement’ home for sick or elderly choir monks. This was a monastery in miniature, complete with its own chapel. It was built a distance away so that any relaxation of discipline for the sick would not affect the monks in the main body of the community
