Looking down the valley again, you’ll see the remains of the infirmary, the abbey’s large hospital and ‘retirement’ home for sick or elderly choir monks. This was a monastery in miniature, complete with its own chapel. It was built a distance away so that any relaxation of discipline for the sick would not affect the monks in the main body of the community
