Historic Name Changes

Historic Name Changes:

The City of Lake Alfred celebrated its 100th birthday in 2015. The city was incorporated in 1913 as Fargo, and then changed its name to Lake Alfred two years later. The earliest known name for the community was Wahneta in 1888. Since then, we've been known as New Armenia, Codington, Bartow Junction, and Chubb. Chubb became Fargo, but the US Postal Service ordered another name change. Fargo was too often confused with the city of Largo on Florida's west coast. Finally the name Lake Alfred was chosen for the city, named after the lake and Alfred Parslow. No other community in Polk County has undergone so many name changes.
