Old South Meeting House, built in 1729, was one of the most important gathering places in Revolutionary Boston. In December 1773, thousands of colonists packed inside to debate what should be done about British taxes and three ships loaded with tea sitting in Boston Harbor. When negotiations failed, the meeting ended and a group of colonists headed toward the waterfront, where they carried out the Boston Tea Party. The building survived the Revolution and still stands today as one of the most important landmarks on Boston’s Freedom Trail.
