Texas Spotted Whiptail Lizards

The Texas Spotted Whiptail lizard is one of the larger whiptail species in Texas, with adults reaching a total length of one foot, although the average is 7-9 inches. These lizards are very fast movers and when disturbed they will run a short distance, stop and check to see if they’re being chased, then either nonchalantly begin walking around or continue running. They prefer habitats of arid to semi-arid grasslands, rocky arroyos and rocky hillsides. It is most common to see them on sandy soil where there is a sparse covering of shrubs and trees and on this Trailway.
