The Fragrant Walk is a garden highlight, with blooms for at least 10 months, including Daphnes, Sarcococa, Rhododendrons, and Mahonias. Notable plants include Daphne bholua ‘Jacqueline Postill,’ traced back to seedlings collected in Nepal and developed in England, and Rhododendron loderi, a hybrid by Sir Giles Loder with large fragrant flowers. The garden also features 52 types of Mahonia and handkerchief trees, introduced from China in the late 19th century. A special yellow Magnolia campbellii, “Valentine’s Torch,” was discovered flowering unusually early in 2006. The walk ends with Magnolia sulangiana, named after a French cavalry officer, highlighting the historical and botanical stories behind the garden’s remarkable collection.
