Carpenters flag

24 Star Flags

As you turn and walk away from the Chapel down the road toward the small Foreman’s Cottage with the herb garden by the door, you will continue down the road and over the Mill Pond bridge to the first building on your right. This is the Blacksmiths Shop and here you will see one of two 24 star flags on display.

There was even more cause than usual for celebration on Independence Day in 1822: a new flag was released to commemorate the recognition of Missouri (August 10, 1821) as the twenty-fourth state of our nation. Just as the United States was continuing to expand and grow, so too was James Allaire hoping to expand his own business. He bought the property which you are visiting during this same year. Twenty-four stars would remain the standard for 14 years, until mid1836, when Andrew Jackson was president. This flag was flown during a time of great economic prosperity, both for Allaire Village in particular and for the United States as a whole.

If you follow the path farther into the village, past the four story General Store, you will see the Carpenters Shop where you will find the second 24-star flag, which is usually on view whenever our Carpenter is in residence.
