Woman’s Hood (Tarha)

Saudi Arabia

Mid-20th century

Cotton, metal, beads, silver tassels

It is customary in Saudi Arabia for a woman to cover her hair and (frequently) to veil her face when out in public. One type of hair covering is the Tarha, whose embellishments add weight to the traditional scarf, helping to keep it in place. The design suggests that it would likely be worn for special occasions, such as weddings or the Eid celebration, which marks the end of Ramadan.
