Glengarry Bonnet

Scotland, UK

Late 20th century

Wool, cotton, grosgrain ribbon

This traditional Scottish bonnet is made from the Royal Stewart tartan, a type of plaid associated with the House of Stewart, the dynasty that ruled Scotland from 1371 to 1714. The Glengarry Bonnet can be worn as part of a Scottish military uniform or as traditional Highlands civilian dress. Tartan, a woven pattern of horizontal and vertical bands, is considered a cultural icon of Scotland. However, it was not until the 1800s that tartan patterns became a sign of clan allegiance.
