Kalash Hood (Kupa)

Pakistan

Mid-20th century

Wool, cowrie shells, buttons, beads

The Kalash people have maintained their traditions and their religion, which is a form of polytheism; their reverence for nature is displayed in their spiritual and daily lives. The Kupa, a formal piece of women’s headwear, is worn atop the Shushut (a decorative headdress) at festivals and for special occasions. In many parts of Asia, cowrie shells are believed to have magical powers, ensuring a woman’s fertility, and are also worn to avert harm from the evil eye.
