Introduction

[Centre Street can be noisy, you might want to move down Green Street slightly to find a more quiet space - the Blue Frog Bakery is also worth a stop!]

Green Street was laid out in 1836 and is one of the few roads that connected Centre Street (which dates from 1662) and Washington Street. Centre Street was known as the "the Road to Dedham" and was a free road. Washington Street was the Dedham Turnpike. Green Street has played a key role in Jamaica Plain’s development, functioning as a residential, commercial, and transportation conduit in the lives of the district’s residents. Although Green Street was subdivided as early as 1851 for stores, factories and houses, it was not extensively developed until the late 1870s with construction continuing until the early 1900s.  It's largely residential now, but we will find some vestiges of its commercial past.

This image is form the 1970s and shows the storefronts where Blue Frog is today.
