Mary a. dewey grave 2019

Directions!

To get to your first stop, you’ll have to listen closely to my directions. Sometimes locating these graves is like finding a needle in a bone-stack.

Begin at the starting point; the waiting room to your left, the visitor center to your right, and a three-road fork splitting in front of you. The left one is less of a road and more of a parking area for the waiting room. Take the center, main street path up about 200 feet or 65 meters. Before you get as far as the next fork in the road, keep your eyes to the left for a tombstone that says ‘Ross’ and go to it. You’ll have to step off the road for this one. The Ross tombstone should be pretty easy to notice, and like I said, if you hit the upcoming fork in the road, you’ve gone too far.

While you’re on the move, let me discuss some quick cemetery etiquette guidelines that are important to keep in mind when visiting any resting place. Always be respectful, that’s the general rule of thumb. People visit the cemetery for a variety of reasons, so be sure to give others their due space. If you happen upon a funeral, as this is a still-active cemetery, be sure to give lots of space and be careful not to be overheard.

Protect the nature around you, and do not feed any critters you might encounter today.

Lastly, sometimes people are interested in getting information for worn tombstones by rubbing them with chalk or crayons. This method of retrieving information can damage and wear the markers and it is discouraged. The best source of information on individual markers and plots is at the visitor center.

Okay, when you’ve made it to the ‘Ross’ grave, I have one more step for you. Take a side-step to the left of the Ross marker and another ten feet ahead of you is the backside of two tombstones, about two feet high.  If you go to those, you’ve found our first stop; the grave of Horace P. Dewey. Hit play for the next track when you’re there!
